Privacy

We ask brands to show what their claims rest on. This page does the same for the claims we make about reader data: what is recorded, by whom, and why.

The short version

You can read every page here without giving us anything. There are no accounts to open, no newsletter form, no comment threads and nothing to buy, and we do not sell personal data to anyone.

Google Analytics 4

The site runs Google Analytics 4, a Google service that places cookies in your browser. It reports which pages were viewed, the device and browser type, the page or site that sent the visit, clicks on links leading off the site, and a rough location that Google itself infers. We read these reports to learn which articles readers actually use and where the publication needs work. Google's handling of that data is described in its privacy policy. To keep out of it, block cookies in your browser settings or install Google's opt-out add-on.

Server logs

Our hosting provider keeps ordinary request logs, such as the time of a request, the address requested and the browser's user agent string. They exist to keep the site secure and running.

Automated visitors

Separately, we log visits from search engine and AI crawlers, recognised by the user agent they announce. Each entry holds the bot's name, the path it fetched and the time, nothing more. Human visits are left out of this log, and no IP address is written to it.
