Which Sunscreen Actives Are FDA-Approved for Sensitive Skin

Avobenzone and oxybenzone, a benzophenone-class filter, sit in FDA's Category III: the safety data needed for a final GRASE call, covering absorption, systemic exposure, and reproductive effects, is still incomplete. FDA has not found either ingredient unsafe; the classification records an open data gap rather than a safety verdict. Vanicream Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50

Retailer listings describe the tube as fragrance-free. A 1.7oz tube was priced at $14.50 on Walmart.com, checked 2026-09-09. No octocrylene, oxybenzone, or avobenzone appears among its ingredients, so the Category III filters FDA flagged for more data are absent from this formula.

EltaMD UV Pure Broad-Spectrum SPF 47

EltaMD's UV Pure Broad-Spectrum SPF 47 pairs zinc oxide at 10.0% with titanium dioxide at 5.5%, per its FDA drug listing on DailyMed (SPL setid 9afe900b-4186-4189-a871-ad6f26fc26e4), keeping both actives inside the GRASE concentration ceiling. The product is marketed fragrance-free and ships in a single 4 fl oz (114g) size. Third-party retail listings put it between $43 and $49, checked 2026-09-09; the brand's own listed price could not be confirmed for this article. Neither avobenzone nor oxybenzone appears in the formula.

SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Ampoule

The Madagascar Centella Ampoule is a seven-ingredient formula: Water, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Centella Asiatica Extract, 1,2-Hexanediol, Cellulose Gum, and Ethylhexylglycerin. It contains no fragrance ingredient and no UV filter, which places it outside FDA's sunscreen GRASE framework entirely rather than inside or outside a specific filter category. The brand sources the Centella Asiatica Extract from Madagascar, its hero ingredient, and sells the ampoule in three sizes: USD 9.50 for 30ml, USD 13.50 for 55ml, and USD 17.60 for 100ml, each price checked 2026-09-08 on the brand's US product page (sku USSKA022). The texture is thin and spreads like water, absorbing without residue when patted into skin. For someone already using one of the three mineral sunscreens above, this ampoule works as the hydrating layer applied underneath it: a person with dry or easily irritated skin gets a fragrance-free moisture step to pair with a zinc oxide or titanium dioxide sunscreen, without adding a second filter to track against FDA's list.

Where the four line up
